The existing house seemed to encapsulate the older ways of living - when 'house' was a humble abode, big enough for just the basics, and the front porch was the epicentre of domestic bliss. With the house stripped back close to its origins, it needed a new version of what the front porch was. The front addition became like the bow of a ship (the old house): slightly elevated and floating, outward looking yet still protective, a solid chiselled form. This room gives the inhabitants a dialogue with the street, and a sense of connection to the wider environment of sun, sea and escarpment. It facilitates a social and relaxed use, and encourages a coming-and-going and passing-through. This project became as much about informed restraint as it was about making more, and the awareness of what little we really need.

“We approached Campbell to help us renovate an old cottage in Coledale. Our plans included building a new kitchen and living area extending out from the original house, maximising the floorplan to include another room and updating the interior where needed. An important part of the brief was that we retain as much of the original building as possible.
From our first meeting, Cam’s approach was honest and thorough. Through initial discussions with Cam and our architect, we knew what to expect and what everyone’s roles and responsibilities were. We understood how our choices would effect the building process, so were able to plan for that to help facilitate a smooth build.
Cam took care to keep us well informed once the building was underway and worked hard to ensure there were no surprises (other than pleasant ones!) There is a singular intention with Cam’s work, from the way he has built a team of like-minded building professionals around him, down to his calm yet determined drive to deliver quality work. On this project, he was able to balance his passion for a high quality build with the constraints of a finite budget and fixed timeline. With everyone taking responsibility and working together, Cam and his team were able to bring to fruition a bespoke renovation with quality in all the right areas.
We were delighted that the process ran so smoothly and resolved on-time and on-budget, a rare and delightful outcome for any building project! The joy of living in a house with such a fine level of craftsmanship cannot be understated. Heartfelt thanks to Cam and his team!”
